Emmanuelle Devos excels in Martin Provost’s intense account of the life of writer Violette LeDuc. The film expounds the notion that art is not so much inspired by life, but is an accurate reflection of it, as LeDuc not only molds herself through painful experience into the literary creature she wants to be, but becomes a model of inspiration for other writers, particularly Simone de Beauvoir. Beautifully shot, Violette is articulate, intelligent cinema.
