The exceptional Christian Zacharias makes a welcome return to The Bridgewater Hall in the dual role of conductor and soloist. From the keyboard he performs and directs Chopin’s Second Piano Concerto. Dedicated to a mysterious muse figure called Delphina Potocka, it is a passionate work with an exquisite slow movement and a vigorous mazurka finale.
Three superb French pieces make up the rest of the programme: Fauré’s touching Pelléas et Mélisande Suite (with its famous and exquisite Sicilienne), Ravel’s elegiac yet elegant Pavane pour une infant défunte and finally Bizet’s Symphony in C, a work bursting with youthful exuberance and sheer joie de vivre.
