Three cash prizes of £100!

A prize of £100 will be awarded for the best review of the exhibition Picturing Stories: British and French Romantic Illustrations (John Rylands Library, Deansgate, Manchester, open until 9 January 2014).

picturing-stories (1)

The exhibition explores the development of French and British Romantic illustration during the period 1770-1860. In contrast to earlier allegorical images, Romantic pictures are full of action, emotion and exciting story-telling.

The prize is open to all Undergraduate students in French Studies at the University of Manchester, in all years of study. One prize will be awarded in each year group.

The review should be no more than 1,500 words, written in English, and should be submitted by email to Dr Peter Cooke ( by 5.00pm on Friday 27 December 2013. The reviews will be judged by a committee of tutors in French. The winning reviews will be published on the School Intranet and on the Manchester French Connections website. The winners will also demonstrate transferable skills (working to deadline, organisation, self-reflexivity) to advertise on their CVs.

An exhibition review should:

  • discuss the rationale of the exhibition
  • discuss the layout, coherence and presentation of the exhibits
  • comment on some of the exhibits
  • comment on the supporting material (e.g. the labels, the PDF of expanded labels available through the John Rylands Library website, the DVD in the exhibition room)

A good review evaluates, describes and interprets an exhibition.

For examples of exhibition reviews, see issues of The Burlington Magazine (available in the University of Manchester Library catalogue).

The prize winners will be announced early in Semester 2.
